So I got tired of looking at some these lame ass top 25 lists these magazines and websites put up about scary movies and figured I'd do one of my own so here we go! And feel free to comment and discuss
10. The Omen - Not the scariest movie in the world but it deals with the devil's son and has a creepy kid in it so it has to be on the list
9. The Shining - Now before you start screaming at me for having this so high on the list just listen. Yes this film is creep, strange and Jack Nicholson is awesome in it. But I find this movie boring as hell. NOTHING happens until the very end it's just dull to me. But it is a classic so here it sits at #9
8. The Amityville Horror - Another movie where not a lot really goes on but it is a possessed house so that counts for something! And the red eyes in the window and the "Get Out" phrase is very cool
7. A Nightmare On Elm Street - Now I have to admit when I was a child Freddy Krueger scared the poo out of me but as I grew up I started to realize how funny he was so it took some of the impact from the movie away. But still a child murderer who kills his victims with metal claws on his hand in their dreams is pretty genius.
6. Hellraiser - I never really got into this series much but it was pretty trippy and Pinhead is obviously is an all time great horror character
5. Poltergeist - One of the more underrated scary films in my opinion. I remember growing up and being freaked out by this one. You got corpses popping out of the swimming pool area, killer clowns grabbing you in your room, maggots in the chicken, some guys face peeling off and of course Carol Ann's iconic "Their here". Great movie!
4. Friday The 13th - This series really took off when Jason was on the scene after the original film but this is probably one of the reasons why camping is not one of my favorite things. And nobody will ever look at old school goalie masks the same again
3. Halloween - This is rates high with me because Michael Myers is my personal boogeyman. If I ever have nightmares it's not Freddy or Jason that's after me it's always Michael in that pale, expressionless face tracking me down.
2. The Exorcist - Most folks list this as their favorite one and I can't really argue with that it is by far one of the more frightening and disturbing movies of all time. And dealing with religion, possession and kids plus being based off of true events is a recipe for success. THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELLS YOU!!!
1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Coming in at #1 for me is Leatherface and his wonderful family of cannibals in Texas. Is there a more disturbing scene in cinema history than the dining room table scene? Leatherface cutting up people and wearing their skin on his face, the grandpa who looks like he's dead trying to hammer that poor girls skull and just the overall make up of the movie and how it is all realistic! This movie COULD REALLY HAPPEN!! It's not dealing with spirits, religion, dreams or invincible killers. It is just a jacked up group of psychotic cannibals living in some shit town in Texas bottom line.
So there ya go my personal list of favorite horror/scary/halloween movies to watch. And FYI when i list these I'm listing the original films and not the lame remakes that people keep churning out. Have a happy and safe Halloween!
