Deftones bassist Chi Cheng remains in a coma following a November car accident but has now been moved to a different hospital for long-term care, according to a new post on the band's MySpace page. The post stated, "Chi remains in a coma, and as of this morning there's been no significant change in his condition. Last week he was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and transferred to a brain rehabilitation hospital in Northern California. The hospital specializes in the care and management of traumatic and non-trauma related brain injuries with a team of highly skilled therapists, nurses and consultants. He's in great hands. Please continue to pray for our brother, and thank you all for your love and support."
Cheng was gravely injured in a November 3rd car crash in northern California and has not regained consciousness since.
His mother Jeanne has continued to post updates about his condition, writing last month that his vital signs had remained stable and that he had shown enough signs of brain activity for doctors to remove monitors from his skull. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends.
Metallica leads the list of acts appearing on Live From Bonnaroo 2008, a new DVD due in January and filmed at the seventh edition of the popular music festival this past June. Additional artists featured on the disc include Pearl Jam, the Raconteurs, Jack Johnson, My Morning Jacket and several others. The DVD was originally offered only to fans who bought tickets to the 2008 show, but is now being made available to the general public for a limited time.
The hard-rocking Metallica was a somewhat controversial choice for the usually laid-back Bonnaroo event. Drummer Lars Ulrich said the band, veterans of the European festival circuit, were glad to participate in a similar event at home: "To me it's about the sense of community and it's about shared experiences and about variety, and those European festivals have been thriving on that for decades. And I think it's awesome that that's starting to happen now with, you know, Bonnaroo and Coachella and the whole festival thing in America is just starting to, like, sort of pop a little more."
The eighth edition of Bonnaroo will take place from June 11th through June 14th, 2009 at its usual location, a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee.
The track list for Live From Bonnaroo 2008 is:
"Old Enough" - The Raconteurs
"Let Them Rock" - Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
"Love Is New" - Broken Social Scene
"Think Locally/F*** Globally" - Gogol Bordello
"Lock S***/Right Now" - Chali 2na with Galactic
"Fade To Black" - Metallica
"Come On, Help Me Lift Him Up" - Lee Boys
"Back in Your Head" - Tegan & Sara
"We Laugh at Danger (And Break All the Rules)" - Against Me!
"Die Die Die" - The Avett Brothers
"If I Had Eyes" - Jack Johnson
"One Better" - Les Claypool
"Colony of Birchmen" - Mastodon
"Despite What You've Been Told" - Two Gallants
"I'm Amazed" - My Morning Jacket
"Better Man" - Pearl Jam
Singer Scott Weiland continues to cast doubt on the future of Stone Temple Pilots in a new interview with USA Today. There has been little news about the group's plans following the recent completion of its six-month reunion tour, while Weiland has just released his second solo album, Happy in Galoshes, and plans to hit the road in support of it in January. He told USA Today, "There's a beauty in being part of a band, when there's equality and trust. But at this phase of my life, I want to write and not have to think about whether a song is going to be a hit . . . I've been saying for a long time that I couldn't see myself shaking my (butt) in leather pants when I'm 40. My goal in STP was to leave an imprint. That was done."
Weiland and STP drummer Eric Kretz were sued recently by the band's label, Atlantic Records, over contractual issues, and Weiland has expressed displeasure with the possibility of the group owing the label several albums.
Weiland told us that he feels much better pursuing his own goals: "The real priority is making my own music. You know, I've been waiting to do it for a long time. Then (previous band) Velvet Revolver came along and it pushed the process back even further. But basically I wanna start living a life. I feel like I can do that when I'm writing and putting out my own records."
The singer also indicated to USA Today that although he quit heroin six years ago, he still drinks and earlier this year "relapsed on cocaine" in the midst of his divorce from his wife Mary, who he calls "the love of my life."
Last year, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and his brother suffered a fatal drug overdose, while his grandfather is dying of emphysema.
Weiland has two children, eight-year-old Noah and six-year-old Lucy. He says he is considering moving out of Los Angeles to provide both them and himself with a less chaotic lifestyle.
